the ac has been implicated in the processing of auditory hallucinations, particularly in patients with schizophrenia. for example, patients with auditory hallucinations have been shown to have greater activation of the ac than those without hallucinations [ 15 ]. it has been suggested that the ac could play a role in the generation of auditory hallucinations [ 16 ]. furthermore, the ac is involved in the generation of internally generated auditory perceptions in the absence of external stimuli. it has been shown that the ac is activated during musical hallucinations, which are sensations perceived in the absence of external musical stimuli [ 17 ].

in the case described here, the patient had experienced musical obsessions since she was diagnosed with otosclerosis. she had a history of depression and anxiety disorders and had been prescribed medications for these conditions. she had never heard music before she started experiencing musical obsessions. she reported a feeling of needing to hear a certain note that was very strong and persistent, not only affecting her life, but also distressing her family. this feeling was similar to her previous experience with music obsessions.

the most important finding in our case was that musical obsession is a new phenomenon that has not been reported previously. it is possible that musical obsessions were present prior to the onset of symptoms of otosclerosis, but were masked by other psychiatric symptoms. it is also possible that musical obsessions are a new symptom in patients with otosclerosis or with other psychiatric disorders.

[120] It is also important to build authentic relationships between the culture and the Church, so as to avoid the “alienation effect” which is frequent in converts who do not know the language of their missionary context. Lastly, the Indian people have an environment which is harsh and demanding, which creates many difficulties for the missionaries, especially for women. The Church, with a constant prayer and vigilance, will try to respond to the needs of India, with God’s assistance.

These days a new passion is born in India for the spiritual renewal of the Veda and for a greater appreciation of the great cosmological tradition, which has enriched the traditional culture of India and which must be preserved. [121] Many Indians are impatient for the Catholic Church and are waiting for her with great enthusiasm. It is important for us to have the freedom and the wisdom to listen to the Indian people and to help them to realize their spiritual riches. It is necessary to recover that spirituality so as to be able to transmit it to a more devout generation. The Church should not permit herself to be limited by cultural boundaries which do not permit her to enter into the reality of the spirituality of the people.
